A couple years ago I saw a young girl in LA walking down the street with a cute black tote bag that had the words “PEOPLE ARE POISON” emblazoned on it in a bold white font. I furrowed my brow and thought to myself, “Aren’t you people?”
This week Jade S. Sasser published an article in the LA Times titled, “It’s almost shameful to want to have children.” Laughable? Sure. We could just roll our eyes, but it keeps coming up, what gives?
Let’s take their side for a moment. The world is more polarized than ever. The world is a harsh place where no one can survive. The earth will literally be on fire sooner rather than later and there’s nothing we can do about it. How dare you bring a child into this world?
But assuming they’re right, and no one alive today can solve these problems, shouldn’t we have as many damn kids as possible so one of them can?
Otherwise, they’re declaring that they deserve to be the final generation to enjoy God’s green earth.
This is a deeply self-centered ideology—a pathetic, self-aggrandizing form of nihilism. If you don’t have your dictionary handy, I’m saying they’re selfish brats.
My advice? Put down your phone and take a deep breath:
Inhale slowly for four seconds… exhale gently for four seconds. Inhale… exhale.
Feeling better? Now, it’s time to act. Less Greta, more Boyan.
